A string of our favourite celebrities are facing some very difficult health issues – from Sir Chris Hoy to Pauline Quirke.
Here, as Pauline’s dementia diagnosis is shared, ED! runs down all the stars currently enduring some very challenging health issues…
Celebrity health issues: Max George’s heart surgery
The Wanted singer Max George was hospitalised before Christmas following issues with his heart. The star, 36, was fitted with a pacemaker in the lead up to Christmas and has since been sharing his recovery updates to social media.
Unfortunately, Max is now set for more surgery, with doctors needing to investigate enlarged lymph nodes in his lungs.
He explained on social media: “This could be a sign of what caused my heart problems. I’ve got to have a lung biopsy in a couple of weeks. It sounds pretty gnarly. It might tell us what the cause was.”
Max was admitted to hospital after falling ill, where experts discovered irregularities with his heart. He has since admitted he “thought he was going to die” ahead of surgery.
Pauline Quirke’s dementia diagnosis
Birds of a Feather star Pauline Quirke, 65, has been diagnosed with dementia, as shared by her husband Steve Sheen this week.
The TV icon was diagnosed with dementia in 2021, Steve revealed in a statement on Tuesday (January 21).
He explained that it was “with a heavy heart” that his wife is taking a break from her professional and commercial duties, due to her diagnosis.
Sir Chris Hoy diagnosed with terminal cancer
Olympic athlete, Sir Chris Hoy, sadly revealed his cancer is terminal and he has two to four years to live, in recent months.
A scan last year showed a tumour in his shoulder. A second scan later found the main cancer was in his prostate. The cancer has since spread to his pelvis, hip, ribs and spine.
He also recently shared that his wife, Sara Kemp, was diagnosed with “very active and aggressive” multiple sclerosis after a scan last year.
On his wife’s diagnosis, Chris said it was “such a huge blow, when you’re already reeling”.
Oti Mabuse opens up about being pre-diabetic
Former Strictly pro Oti Mabuse recently opened up about living with pre-diabetes in a chat with the Loose Women in November.
Oti gave birth to her first child in December 2023 and explained that she was first diagnosed with gestational diabetes, which runs in her family.
She has since shared her attempts to get back into fitness with regular updates to her social media. She told the Loose Women: “My reason for getting back into fitness was that I found out I was pre-diabetic, actually.
“I am still pre-diabetic, and it’s about trying to get back to a point where I feel strong. I can handle my food, and keep my sugar levels alright.”
Davina McCall’s brain surgery
Davina recently endured a stint in the ICU after undergoing surgery to remove a benign brain tumour.
After discovering the potentially life-threatening diagnosis, Davina told her followers in December: “Hi, so I’m posting this, it will be Friday morning.
“I’m posting it because a few months ago I did a menopause talk for a company and they offered me a health scan in return. Which I thought I was going to ace, but it turned out I had a benign brain tumour called a colloid cyst, which is very rare.”
Davina has since said she feels like she has been given a second shot at life after having the surgery.
Tulisa Contostavlos’ battle with Bell’s palsy
N-Dubz singer Tulisa recently explained that she has suffered with Bell’s palsy, a condition that affects one in 70 people in the UK.
Whilst discussing her health issue on Olivia Atwood’s So Wrong It’s Right podcast recently, Tulisa explained that her initial attack happened when she was 24.
She detailed that she was given steroid injections and left with swelling before her face dropped and remained that way for seven months. Tulisa explained that, during this time, she hid in her house.
She has since undergone a series of surgeries to balance out the droopiness.
Bell’s palsy is a neurological disorder that causes weakness or paralysis on one side of the face.
Adam Thomas left ‘unable to walk’ amid arthritis struggle
Adam shared his rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis in 2o23 and has since explained that he’s dealing with psoriatic arthritis.
This condition is characterised by joint pain, swelling and stiffness, according to the NHS website.
Discussing his excruciating diagnosis, Adam has previously written on social media: “I couldn’t even get dressed this morning on my own. Couldn’t drive to work. “I mean I can barely walk and my wrists and fingers feel like they’re broken. That’s no exaggeration!”
“I wouldn’t have got out of bed today if it wasn’t for work. It got better throughout the day with a [bleep]load of painkillers! But wow… these last few days have been scary.
“Had a little cry to myself today. It can just really get on top of you!”
