Helen Flanagan, who is reportedly set to appear in court today, has been faced with various obstacles in the past year.

The 34-year-old has admitted that she previously feared her three young children would be “better without her” amid a struggle with her mental health.

The star was sent into psychosis for a few days last year, something she was unaware of, due to a bad reaction to a medication.

Helen has also previously opened up about her struggle after splitting with her ex-fiance, Scott Sinclair.

She previously told The Mirror that in wake of her split with Scott, who she had been with for 13 years, she endured a “very scary” psychotic episode.

Helen Flanagan on co-parenting woes

She shared: “My kids weren’t with me on Christmas Day because I like to be really fair with my ex, and it sounds so silly because it was only one day, but it hit me really hard. The plan was for me to take them to Bali for New Year instead, and although I enjoyed it, I didn’t feel myself. I was struggling. I felt terrible when I got back, I was crying all the time, I felt so low.”

She has also described the traumatic separation as a “divorce” rather than a break up. Helen said at the time: “I don’t see it as a break-up, I see it as a divorce. We were together 13 years. But instead of processing it all, I threw myself into work and shut off my emotions. I just went into survival mode. Then it all came to the surface earlier this year and I was mentally and physically breaking down.”

Helen, who suffers from ADHD, also recalled an emotional psychotic episode, triggered by a reaction to medication. She explained: “It was really sad and very scary. I was seeing things and I felt like I was in danger all the time.”

Thankfully, Helen’s nanny offered to look after her children so she could focus on her recovery. Unfortunately, her health issues caused Helen to have to withdraw from the theatre tour of Cluedo 2.

Despite going their separate ways in 2022, Helen admitted to some difficulties with her ex, last year, in a candid chat where she admitted the pair still butt heads.

Chatting on the Life of Bryony podcast, she said: “No disrespect to the father of my children, you know, I’ve had three children with him, and I always have a lot of love for him.

“We’re both good people, but together we were very toxic. I mean, I’m on block at the moment on Scott’s phone. I really am. I’m on block. We do each other’s [bleep] head in. But I know he always will have a love for me, you know. You always have kind of a respect for each other. I know he’s not a bad guy. We’ve just got our own [bleep] going on.”

Speaking to Charlotte Dawson on her Naughty Corner podcast, Helen has previously dished the details on her relationship with the father of her children: “I still love him very much. I care about him deeply, but we don’t like each other.

“We don’t like each other at all. We don’t get on. I do know that Scott – he’d never admit it – cares about me too and he does love me.

“But I’m so done. I could never have another relationship again where we would always be bickering. I haven’t got another argument in me.

“As women we try and do anything we can to make it work with the father of your children and I did. But I think for me if I was in a relationship with someone else it would have to be easy because I haven’t got the energy in me again. I’ve done all that with the father of my kids.”

Helen Flanagan on ‘single parenting’

Helen also discussed how co-parenting, although challenging, can sometimes be “hilarious”.

In her chat with Charlotte Dawson last year, she recalled: “I’ve been a single mum for two years now. Co-parenting is hilarious. We were together for 13 years. The last time I saw him, I thought it was quite funny. I was taking the [bleep] out of him because he had a bucket hat on. I think he was trying not to laugh.

“He lives in Bath and I live in North Manchester so its about five hours and we meet in Birmingham to exchange things and the kids. He’s throwing things in my boot and I just started taking the mickey out of his bucket hat to lighten the mood.

“We just try and not be in the same house together because the children are the priority and I want a good environment for them and I don’t want them to see us arguing.”

Helen’s battle with health issues

The star has also been open about her struggle with Pre-menstrual Dysphoric Disorder, a battle that has left her “crying all the time”.

She confided in her followers last September that she might as well “throw [herself] in the bin” due to the severity of her health condition.

She described the condition, a severe form of PMS, as a “nightmare”.

Helen expressed the harsh realities of the disorder, stating: “It’s horrible with hormones as you can’t control what the hormones do to your brain.”

Earlier this month, Helen also shared that she was struggling with another health setback, explaining: “Had to go [to] to the doctors in my PJs because I have such a bad water infection. So painful x.”
