Max George on ‘panicky’ trip to hospital amid heart issues

In a new interview with The Sun, Max has opened up about his terrifying heart-related ordeal, which saw him have life-saving surgery before Christmas.

In the chat with the publication, Max explained how he’d been feeling “rough” for a few days, but couldn’t understand why.

However, things took a turn when he stayed at his mum’s house. The star, who is in a relationship with Maisie Smith, woke up to find his hands were blue and his arms were grey.

His mum urged him to go to a GP, however, when he was sent home by the doctor, his mum and a friend told him to go to hospital.

At this point, Max admitted that he was left feeling “panicky” as he was rushed to hospital.

Once there, he was given some shocking news by doctors.

Max George on life-saving pacemaker surgery to fix heart issues

The star was told that he needed a pacemaker as something was “not right” with the bottom of his heart.

A pacemaker is a small device that is implanted under your skin to regulate your heart’s rhythm. It sends electrical pulses to the heart to keep it pumping at a regular rate.

Max broke the news to his girlfriend Maisie via WhatsApp. She was about to head on stage for a panto in Kent when she got the news.

“It was really scary, all sorts is going on in your head, and certainly not a place I thought I’d be in at 36. I was awake all night, feeling a closing in my throat, I was really struggling to move and had really deep, slow breaths. There was nothing that they could do to stop that. I could have lived maybe a few weeks, maybe a few months, but it could have been a few hours. We didn’t know,” he said.

Max wrote his will in hospital bed

The star then went on to say that he was so worried he’d die, he wrote his will in the notes section of his phone.

“That first night I wrote a will, I thought I was going to die. If I could go from being absolutely on top of the world to being told ‘the bottom part of your heart isn’t working’, I kept thinking in my head, ‘Well, what if the top half stops working overnight?’ When you get told that you really realise what your responsibilities are. I’ve got a partner, Maisie, I’ve got a family. I’ve got two little nephews and all of that stuff really comes to the front of it all,” he said.

One night, his heartrate dropped to 26 beats per minute (a normal measurement is 60-100 bpm). “It was quite close that night, it really felt like my neck was closing up and that’s when the sort of panic really kicked in. I felt like I was dying. It was the worst, I felt emotional,” he said.

After a week in hospital, Max’s pacemaker surgery date was set – just seven days before Christmas.

Despite complications with his veins being collapsed, the surgery was completed after three hours. And the first person Max saw afterward was girlfriend Maisie.

Max was released from hospital two days before Christmas, and is now recovering at his home in Manchester.
