Susan Calman, whose Christmas Cruising show airs today (Friday, December 27), once opened up about a hidden health battle she’d been facing.
The Scottish comedian, 50, made some frank confessions about her health battle during an interview in 2016.
Susan Calman on mental health battle
In her 2016 book, Cheer Up Love: Adventures In Depression With The Crab, Susan opened up about her struggles with her mental health.
The star personified her depression into The Crab of Hate, a constant companion in her life.
When Susan was 16, she self-harmed and attempted suicide. She admitted that this time in her life is “difficult” to talk about.
Speaking to the Daily Star at the time, she said: “It’s something which I feel almost embarrassed about sometimes.”
The star then continued, saying that she struggled with confidence when she was younger.
“By not talking I ended up in a quite terrible place. I felt alone, isolated, confused about why I couldn’t just make myself happy. Unsurprisingly, after years of keeping quiet everything fell apart in a rather horrific way. I tried to kill myself. I took a load of pills one day because I just couldn’t see any way out,” she then said.
Strictly and Susan
In 2017, Susan took part in Strictly Come Dancing. She was paired up with Kevin Clifton, and together, they finished in seventh place. For those who don’t remember, Joe McFadden won that year.
Speaking about the show, Susan revealed that the show helped boost her mood considerably.
“The joy I’m getting from performing is helping my mood and how I feel about things. Being part of the show feels amazing and every day I absolutely appreciate what’s happening,” she said.
Elsehwere, in an interview with the BBC in 2018, Susan revealed that she works out, which helps her deal with her depression – hence why she has a punching bag in her garage!
“Part of the battle is looking at what’s contributing to your mental health issues. Can you find things you could easily change? And for me it was surrounding myself with positivity, and boxing,” she told the BBC.
“I’m somebody who’s always thinking about things, and a lot of people that have got depression are probably quite similar. They see something and it triggers a thought, whereas I’m trying to deadlift or punching a punchbag. All I’m thinking is trying to do as well as I can in that exercise, so it gives my brain a break,” she then added.
